Issues with Reality

  • Ilana, you had a good run while it lasted; I will always remember your sexy boots. After pulling an Arzt and blowing herself up (I guess that’s what she’d been “training all [her] life” to do), Hurley surmises it was the Island’s/Jacob’s way of telling them blowing up Ajira 316 was not the proper course of action.

This surmisal (is that a word?) comes courtesy of Michael’s exposition on Smokey’s nefarious plot and his insistence Hurley and his crew not mess around with dynamite that could get them killed. Hurley, summoning on his robust history of explosive demolition work (like when he desperately tried to stamp out the dynamite fuse that would blow open the Swan Station hatch in season 1), takes care of the remaining stockpile by lighting the proverbial fuse of the Black Rock to obliterate it once and for all.

  • Lots of potential Easter eggs in the Hurley/Libby scene in the Santa Rosa recreation room. The first, and most obvious, was the chalkboard mural featuring a desert island and a number of “creatures.”

I’m not sure what the Pac-Man-like thing in the corner is, but it’s eating a red butterfly. I keyed in on the giant, white, alligator-shaped blob hovering above the Island. There’s also a smaller black mass below the Island. I’ve mulled this over before but never had any evidence to back it up, but could it stand to reason Jacob also has smoke abilities, albeit white? I keep thinking of the “clouds” that transitioned us to Desmond staring into the Oceanic arrivals board in the X timeline.

  • There are colorful placards with letters all over the room. I’ve been unsuccessful in coming up with any actual word thus far, but one letter in particular stood out to me: the Y above Hurley’s shoulder.

    y

We saw Hurley reading “Y: El Ultimo Hombre” (“The Last Man”) in 5×06: “316.”

Y: The Last Man is a comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, about the only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal (barring the same man’s pet monkey) on Earth. [Wikipedia]

  • So here’s a list of all the letters I saw: Y, M, Z, U, A, X, P, V, backwards D, and J. There was also a 7. I’ll leave it to other sites to decode whether or not there’s anything of consequence here.
  • Hurley played Connect 4 often in his time at Santa Rosa (Island timeline).

And if I’m remembering correctly, his opponent was always the guy from whom he first heard the Numbers (4 8 15 16 23 42).

  • And speaking of the Numbers, there was an obvious reference in calling out Desmond’s order # (42) at one of Hurley’s Mr. Cluck’s fast food eateries.

  • Esau had a couple of odd activities this evening. The first being his spear, or at least that’s what it appears to be. Esau seems to leave it open for debate when describing its purpose as “when the time is right, it’ll tell me.”

This instantly reminded me of Eko’s “Jesus Stick” on which he scrawled numerous Bible verses and eventually directed him to head North in search of his destiny (which turned out to be his death at the hands of Smokey).

The other odd moment was probably one of those things I’m reading way too much into, but why would Esau need to take a swig of water from a canteen? He’s invulnerable to bullets and can transform into a giant pillar of death-dealing, black smoke but needs to stay hydrated?

  1. Re: The T-Rex trophy. You asked about the relevance of the shape of the trophy. The donation was to the Paleontology Museum, thus the dinosaur trophy. If you were asking for a less obvious answer, the only thing that I can think of is this: Didn’t Hurley once suggest (very early on) that the noises in the jungle might be dinosaurs? Or am I making that up all together?

Thanks for yet another awesome recap / discussion. – les

  2. Psi equalling twenty three could be indicative of the twenty third psalm from the Bibile…Yeah, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, For God is with me, thy rod and thy staff comfort me, ….. and I will walk in the valley of the Lord forever….

  3. Oh, yes, and as far as the red, watch the special features on M night Shamalan’s Sixth Sense…I believe he used it for a metaphor of death….I can’t remember now…But there was the red door knob to the basement, the red in the restaurant, and a couple of other times he said he used it for a purpose…I just can’t remember the detail right now… and could the “bottom” stuff you mention in your chalkboard picture be indicative of the submerged island we saw in this year’s first episode?

  4. I had to wait twenty four hours to see this episodie, and to read your commentary….both terrific, as usual…thanks! I am still waiting for Jin to be reunited with Sun
