We're not going to Guam, are we?

Quick Hits cont’d.

  • I trust I don’t need to spell out the Thomas the Apostle analogy to Jack spelled out pretty clearly in the episode. Read more at Wikipedia if need be.

  • We now know why the “ghost” of Christian Shepherd has regularly appeared wearing tennis shoes. Jack indicated his dead father didn’t have any nice shoes with him while on his bender down under, so he just put some nondescript white shoes on him because he really didn’t care.

  • Wasn’t sure quite what to make of the whole interlude involving Jack’s grandfather, Ray, and the magic show he wandered out of the “home” to go see. Jack got his dad’s shoes out of the deal, but something seemed off about dear ole’ Ray.

  • Is it just me or did Locke’s corpse have a case of 5 o’clock shadow? Meaningful sign of things to come, or just tight scheduling that didn’t allow for Terry O’Quinn to shave?

Looks a tad different than the corpse in season 4.

  • I’ve talked about Ajira Airways a few times already this season, here and here. Ajira is Hindi for “island.”
  • The Spanish comic book Hurley was reading, entitled “El Ultimo Hombre,” is actually “The Ωmega Man.”

The story occurs in 1977, two years after biological warfare between the People’s Republic of China and the Soviet Union kills most of the world’s human population with biological weaponry (the escalation is shown in flashback and the date March 1975 is indicated by a tattered calendar). U.S. Army Colonel Robert Neville, M.D. (Charlton Heston) — a military scientist — begins to succumb to the plague, and moments before death, in desperation he vaccinates himself against the plague with experimental vaccine 93-B71, which renders him immune. [Wikipedia]

The 2007 Will Smith film, I Am Legend, is also based on this story, which in turn is based on the (much better) novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, written in 1954. Hey, that’s the same year the US Army found the Island and delivered Jughead!

Anyway, Desmond’s time in the Swan Station alone reminds me very much of the story, with the marooned Scot vaccinating himself each day against the “plague” outside.

  • Glad to see Oceanic’s still doing business despite Flight 815’s unfortunate fate.

  • So Aaron’s no longer with the other Oceanic 6 members. Kate, clearing having gone through the emotional wringer, won’t talk to Jack about it and insists he never ask about Aaron again. Clearly she gave him up, but to who? Claire’s mom? Probably. Or maybe to Sawyer’s ex?

Other Stuff from Other Sites

  • Alright, maybe a slight miss on that Spanish comic book:

Y: The Last Man is a comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra, about the only man to survive the mysterious simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth. [Wikipedia] [Sledgeweb]

Brian K. Vaughan is also a writer on Lost.

Thas all, folks. Until next week…

  1. It is a myth that fingernails and hair continue to grow after death. What really happens is that the skin may retract around them, making the hair and nails prickle up and jut out more prominently.

  2. I really love how you pick up on the little clues. However, I am not a science fiction buff so I am ready to give this up as I feel I am being led around by my nose ring. ( that would be the day lol) I only watch because Ms. Lilly is so beautiful. Keep up the good work but I prefer a storyline that was preconceived and not made up as they go.

  3. That’s just it, they’re doing this now b/c it was preconceived. If they were making it up as they went along, they’d have made things a lot simpler for a wider audience. Hang in there.

  4. Did you catch when Jack asked Ben how he could read and Ben responded that his mother taught him. I wonder if he was being sarcastic or if ghost mother taught him…

  5. 315…”John, Chapter 3, verse 16…God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son….
