The Principles of Destiny

THE “B” SPOT
A couple entries for the book club this week: “The Chosen” by Chaim Potok
— an altogether appropriate title in light of Ben’s proximity;

The Chosen tells the story of the friendship between two Jewish boys growing up in 1940’s Brooklyn. Reuven Malter, who has a mind for mathematics, wants to become a rabbi and follows modern methods of studying Judiasm. Danny is a genius son of a Hasidiac Rabbi, Reb Saunders, who expects him to take over his position as tzaddik eventually. [Wikipedia]

“Benjamin Disaeli: Justice and Truth in Action;”

Before and during his political career, Disraeli was well-known as a literary and social figure, although his novels are not generally regarded as a part of the Victorian literary canon. He mainly wrote romances, of which Sybil and Vivian Grey are perhaps the best-known today. He is exceptional among British Prime Ministers for having gained equal social and political renown. He was twice successful as the Glasgow University Conservative Association’s candidate for Rector of the University, holding the post for two full terms between 1871 and 1877. [Wikipedia]

SANDWICH SCIENTIST
Dr. Arzt returns, complaining about his 1950’s lab equipment and more interested in a better parking spot than he is earning one by taking care of the kids.

THIS TIME, IT’S PERSONAL
Mario Van Peebles directed this? No way!

HANS, BUBI, I’M YOUR WHITE KNIGHT!
Good to see William Atherton still finding work as a douchebag, this time as the lecherous Principal Reynolds.

While I’m guessing this site has nothing to do with his namesake, the principal’s name stuck out to me for some reason.

Alas, Wikipedia offers me nothing here.

CHEESE CURDS
I’d like to see some outtakes of this scene on DVD.

DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
But not, thankfully, Nikki & Paolo. Miles dug up their grave to nab that $8 million worth of diamonds he tells Ben about to further negate any bargaining power the former Other leader thought he had.

$3.2 million courtesy of Ben’s “vast network” of contacts and spies isn’t quite as attractive as the shiny stuff.

SOMEONE IS COMING
We likely have our answer to who Jacob told Hurley was coming to the Island a few episodes back: Charles Widmore and his submariners.

Our audience instincts tell us Jacob is good, Esau is bad, Sayid & Claire are infected, Kate is annoying, and Widmore is up to no good. It’s become difficult to accept opposing theories, based on the evidence presented thus far, but we can’t ever assume. All of our assumptions can be turned upside-down with one five-minute stretch of exposition later this season. Widmore could be there to save the Island after all — but what may he be willing to sacrifice and/or destroy to accomplish it? Ben no longer seems willing to make the types of self-interested sacrifices Widmore might.

  1. I also remember a couple of the Others in a hotel room a few seasons back, that couldn’t be killed…can’t remember details or even who it was.

Also, didn’t Jacob ask Ben to go get Richard because he had something to tell him….but then Ben killed Jacob.

I’m confused about all the Others that left the temple before Smokey got there…did they go out and join Smokey at that point? and that is why they were saved? or did they go somewhere else and are still somewhere on the island?

I, for one, like Sun, and can’t wait for Jin and her to be reunited…btw, where is Jin? no, not in the freezer…but on the island healing from the bear trap wound?

Guess my bad memory is just that! Thanks in advance for the “answers”

Having you for a commentator is the best set of “Cliffs Notes” any reader could ask for! THanks!
