Purpose & Destiny

Quick Hits

  • Let’s stay with Richard and his magical ship-in-a-bottle skills. The model ship immediately evoked the Black Rock in a literal sense, but is there some deeper meaning to be had with that scene? Richard’s role, as Ben tells Sun, is that of advisor, one that’s been on the Island for a very, very long time.

More than just an advisor, he may be a manipulator himself. He’ll do what he needs to in order to get the chess pieces that are our characters into position to server whatever aim he, Jacob or the Island have in mind. His model-making within the bottle makes a decent metaphor for the Island and its inhabitants.

  • I’m going to avoid more in-depth discussion of the time travel aspect, but I will say it’s hard to get my brain around the scene where Locke has Richard go to tend to, uh, himself by the Beechcraft. The Island apparently told Locke (or so he says) when to go find himself at the Nigerian drug-runner plane. By doing so, I guess the past isn’t being changed, because that’s what happened. So it would adhere to Faraday’s revised theory that the past can’t be changed.

    Whatever happened, happened.

  • 1977 Eloise Hawking almost seemed to be a co-leader with Widmore, giving Richard orders and having them obeyed. Not sure if that’s simply by virtue of her “complicated” relationship with Charles or if she holds that status in some official capacity.
  • Jack, as I’ve mentioned repeatedly, has grown to be an insufferable bore, but I’m hoping things are starting to change there. He’s definitely become much more like early-Lost Locke now, almost blindly pursuing whatever purpose he thinks feels right.

Locke went through hell when he was struggling to find that purpose; I think Jack may be in store for some unpleasant reality checks relatively soon. He seems to think preventing 815 from crashing will allow things to be “the way they’re supposed to be.” Why, Jack? If the titanic struggle/war that Widmore and others have alluded to is coming, you and all the other 815’er’s can’t play whatever role you’re meant to in that, and bad stuff will happen, one would assume. If we can keep Kate out of the picture, that might reinvigorate the characters.

  • Speaking of Kate, please, someone just put her out of her misery (and us, for that matter). This love triangle can’t possibly be more tired. Ladies, is it really still that interesting at this point? Aren’t you sick of it, too?

Maybe Juliet will take care of her. She looked thrilled when Kate boarded the sub.

I can only hope. Let’s just restrict Kate to some periodic appearance as a ghost. She and Claire can hang out in Ghost Town with Christian Shepherd and talk about their failed relationships with Jack (lover, sister, father).

  • Speaking of lame, what’s up with that horrendous visual effects work on the sub, guys? Battlestar Galactica managed to pull off some stunning FX work week after week on what probably amounts to a fraction of your budget, and you insert a shot like this on your show?

  1. 1. Ok, I agree, I, too, am sick of Kate. I like the “new” Sawyer as he is with Juliette. Let’s hope this “love quadrangle” does serve some real purpose, and isn’t as you describe, “for us ladies”….but the whole “Mother”/pregnancy thing with her, Sun, Ales, and the Others, etc, and Juliette in the lab in the future and coming to the island, has to have some purpose. Also, speaking of Mothers and Fathers, there is also as noted by many, that there is a “Father” issue thing going on with many of the characters as well….maybe it’s a whole “family” thing. So other things besides redemption and destiny are prevalent.
    2. What is the possibility that Locke is now becoming a manipulator himself, and only telling Ben he is going to kill Jacob? Maybe that is not his original intention…but he wants Ben to think that it is, so that he can get Ben to do ????
    3. In the flash forward of Season 3? Kate says to Jack, “we aren’t supposed to go back”. Maybe when Kate gets back this time, (if she does), they accomplish something and flash on the “mainland” the way they did when the donkey wheel was turned, and then Kate, Juliette and Sawyer flash thirty years ahead when we see them in the previews back on the island.
    4. And, finally, I like your music idea. Remember BSG uses notes to find “earth”, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind use tones as well?
    5. Oh, yes, one last piece, I think one of the biggest “mysteries” I want to see resolved is who and what Richard Alpert is….Jacob, maybe? So, maybe that’s why Locke tells Ben he is going to kill Jacob, so that Ben will tell Alpert.
    6. I hope in the end that Ben is truly a “bad guy”, cause I can’t stand him!!!!!!

  2. Is it reasonable to assume that Ben’s “girlfriend”, (when he was a boy)got on the sub with the other Darma people in 1977, and then she comes back? Or do you think she could be related (like maybe Juliette’s sister?) to someone who comes back to the island in the future?
