Let’s Get Started, Shall We?

Quick Hits

  • As per take 1 of Pierre Chang’s orientation video “performance,” The Arrow’s purpose is to “develop defensive strategies and gather intel on the island’s indigenous hostiles…” Hostiles=Others=the natives. I’m guessing whatever Dharma is doing on the Island isn’t sitting well with those natives.
  • For recordkeeping purposes, the lawyer (Dan Norton) at Kate’s door hailed from the law firm of Agostini & Norton. Who hired them?

The first assumption might be Claire’s mom, who would have good reason to want her grandson back. Nah, too easy. The second assumption might be Charles Widmore, trying to eff with the Oceanic 6. Doubt it. My guess is Ben sicced the lawyers on Kate, with the purpose of flushing her out of her now-comfortable life in LA. She needs motivation to want to get back to the Island, and who better than the master manipulator to provide it?

  • Sawyer gave a backhand to Faraday’s face. DAAAAAAAY-UUUUMN! For some reason, it reminded me of of both Rick James and of this clip from my dear friend Maury Povich:
  • Frogurt returns! The alluded-to but never seen onscreen castaway “finally” made an appearance in the webisodes released after season 3, which you can check out here (entitled “Hurley and Frogurt”).

  • Miles makes a comment to Charlotte about it having taken her 20 years to find this place the first time, referring to the Island. This is something that’s been fairly evident since her character was first introduced, but this presents further evidence that she’s been on the Island before, perhaps even having been born there.edit: Miles may have been talking about Widmore, not Charlotte. Blame it on my sleep deprivation.
  • Sun and Widmore get together again, in much less cordial fashion than their first conversation. His line, “I will be respected” seemed less like that of a pompous old windbag than it did someone who’s had power and wielded it ruthlessly. There was real menace and authority behind that line. I’m increasingly curious to see what role he had with/on the Island.

  • I loved Hurley’s intense, “here she comes–right now!” just before the waitress arrives with his chicken sammich. He enjoys food, that guy.
  • The compass presented to Locke was the same Alpert laid out before him with the other items when he found John as a young boy.

    alpert's test

John failed that test by choosing the knife; let’s see what he does now that he’s been given the “correct” object.

  • For those of you that haven’t read my “Lost-ions” post from Sunday, take a gander. As the final seasons progress, I’ll be updating that post with the “answers,” should they become available. If tonight is any indication, we may have quite a few of those crossed off the list come season’s end in May.
  • The narrator of the recap show that aired before tonight’s premiere was Doug Hutchinson, who played Horace Goodspeed. Significance? Nah, I don’t think so either.

Apologies for not having the second episode’s recap up yet; this has taken entirely too long and I need some sleep before work tomorrow. I’ll have it up sometime tomorrow during the day, as well as some more stuff to add to this recap. Credit for screencaps go to Lost-Media.

I thought Miles said that it took Widmore, not Charlotte, 20 years to find the island?

  2. Excellent post and excellent episode.

Remember that weird episode with Nikki and Paulo where they got bit by a spider and became paralyzed? I have a feeling that Locke is similarly paralyzed and has not died. Any thoughts on this?

  3. 1. Widmore and Sun combining forces? (to get Kate on Widmore’s side). Yes, I agree, Ben manipulated Kate to “run”.
    2. “I will be respected”, sounds like a comment that Sun’s Dad would make…any correlation with the two men somehow? (Widmore and Paik?)
    3. Great epidsodes, great recaps
    4. The “lost-ions” – keep ’em up…they keep us sane. Thanks!
    5. Juliette says they didn’t “move” when the others did because they were “inside the “????”, was her explanation. Made sense at the time.

  4. Jeff – what do you think of the possiblity of Miles being the song of Dr. Chang?

Great rundown – thanks for doing it!

  5. Huh, I hadn’t thought of that but it certainly makes sense. Probably the right age and ethnicity. Being born on the Island might explain his abilities as well.

  6. did anyone notice the plane when it almost hit locke and then after it had crash/landed? it does not look like the same plane to me. i dont see any yellow on the bottom of the plane while it’s coming at him, while all other pics of the plane show a yellow bottom.

  7. I found this interesting:

Why would the seemingly ageless Richard need to wear glasses?

And my screencap isn’t quite high-quality enough to tell, but is that a new Dharma logo on Richard’s med kit?

  8. The compass alpert gives to ben…..when removing bullet from bens leg..same one locke gives to sayid in season one when sayid says hes making a compass of sorts…to do some orienteering…?

  9. The compass alpert gives to ben…..when removing bullet from bens leg..same one locke gives to sayid in season one when sayid says hes making a compass of sorts…to do some orienteering…?

Also, when we see martin candles white coat while sitting and recording orientation video he says is for the arrow (which is the jacket i believe he is wearing when going to view drilling problem in the orchid), i think he has on the swan station white coat..continuity error?
