A Lot Can Happen in 42 Minutes

Quick Hits

  • Widmore and Zoe again make references to a timetable, mentioning the “schedule” on which Desmond’s test / experiment was to be adhered to. That schedule’s already been messed with due to Zoe bringing Jin to Hydra Island too soon; who cares at this point?
  • Angstrom the rabbit avoided his fate as unfortunate test subject when something went horribly wrong in the first “test” of the EM box; bunnies have a tough lot in life on this island.

The ångström or angstrom (symbol Å) is an internationally recognized unit of length equal to 0.1 nanometre or 1 × 10−10 metres. It is named after Anders Jonas Ångström. The ångström is often used in the natural sciences for expressing the sizes of atoms, lengths of chemical bonds and the wavelengths of electromagnetic radiation, and in technology for the dimensions of parts of integrated circuits. It is also commonly applied in structural biology.

In 1868, Ångström created a chart of the spectrum of solar radiation that expresses the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum in multiples of one ten-millionth of a millimetre, or 1 × 10−10 metres. [Wikipedia]

  • Significance of George’s limo’s license plate?

(Hard to say, though this plate has apparently been seen on other vehicles this season, namely Locke’s car. Likely just a production goof/continuity error more than anything else.)

  • No explanation necessary on these two screencaps.

  • Nor should one be required for this shot of Desmond gazing into a mirror-like surface.

  • Penny, as I’m sure you all recognized, was running in the same stadium we saw Jack conducting his tour de stade when he first met Desmond in the original timeline.

  • Daniel Widmore is seen playing a piano prior to his party, something he gave up in the name of science in the original timeline (at his mother’s urging).

  • The reference is obvious in the yacht model in Widmore’s L.A. office (recall Desmond’s race around the world that landed him on the Island), but of more interest to me was the painting of the scales containing white and black rocks/chips/items.

We’ve go the light/dark scale in Jacob’s cave, and then there’s the more conceptual point to consider: balance. I mentioned earlier we may end up with castaways choosing one timeline over the other — is there some sort of a balance required between the two? Perhaps this is really what Widmore is set on doing: ensuring the balance between good and evil is maintained (Which, in turn, may keep the proverbial “cork” stoppered against the tide of evil wine. Right.).

  1. I wondered who Penny’s mum is???? Half sister? Meaning she and Farraday (why is his last name Farraday?) share a Dad, Widmore, but who is her Mum????!!!!

Jeff, your conceptualizations of all this are so far over my head, my head spins!! Like I said last week, I have given up trying to figure it all out, and am riding out the rest of the season…Minkowski’s “whatever they were called in Season three?” or was it four when Desmnd is the constant, have been all but forgotten…Darn, I should have watched all the prior seasons before this one started, so I could “keep up”.

Thanks for a great read, as always!!!

  2. any one else catch it when charlie was first talking about his flash, and he saw a woman in cuffs? thought it was a clever inside joke the writer’s made to the real life relationship with evangeline lily.
