Really Bad Jetlag

Quick Hits

  • Let’s start at the end, with the long-awaited appearance of a young Danielle Rousseau and her French science expedition’s shipwreck. I’m not sure anyone expected to see this story told in anything other than flashbacks, but seeing as the show has all but ditched the conventional structure of its first three seasons, we shouldn’t be surprised that we’re seeing it occur in present day, in a way, via Present Day Jin. I might as well be typing in Sanskrit at this point, amirite?

I believe the name of their vessel is the “Besix Douze,” or “Besix 12.” I think the “Besix” is an actual name, so there’s no English translation. I didn’t find much by way of Wiki, other than this site featuring nothing but a picture of a meteor or moon rock and an email address: http://besixdouze.fr/. (I emailed the address, me@besixdouze.fr, with instructions to send me a fresh baguette. I’ll let you know if I get a reply.)

There’s also a Wikipedia entry for a Belgian company called BESIX. Here’s their official site: http://www.besix.com/.

(Translated from French) BESIX is a concept of quality in the world of construction. Founded in 1909, the company knew a regular and impressive growth. It became today an international group of reputation. BESIX covers practically all the fields of construction.

I guess I could see them sending out science expeditions, or maybe “Besix” refers to something else. We’ll see.

  • The other main part of tonight’s episode, which I’ve neglected to this point, takes place back in the “real world” three years in the future. Thankfully, the Jack/Kate drama is kept to a minimum as they’re kept busy tracking down whoever’s trying to take Aaron away from her. As I surmised a week or two ago, it was Ben. It’s not clear if he was really after Aaron, or this was just his way to get Kate running again, and off to the Island. I’m assuming the latter.

Regardless, Jack has an encounter with Claire’s mom, who we find out was in L.A. to collect her settlement check from Oceanic. Coincidentally enough, her lawyer was Dan Norton, another agent in Ben’s vast network of mainland Others, and the one who tried to intimidate Kate into giving a blood sample to prove her maternity over Aaron (and thus get her to start running).

  • Along with Kate is Aaron’s babysitter Sun, who seems to have revenge on her mind. She’s hired a private eye firm, Surveillance Data Investigations, Inc., to spy on Kate, Jack, and whoever else she’s linked to Ben Linus. I spent several minutes pausing and slo-mo’ing the paperwork Sun received in her hotel room, and there’s some mildly interesting stuff.

I’m not sure if the surveillance logs are regarding Kate or Ben, or perhaps both. Who the heck is “Lee Chin” and why did he commit suicide? Who keeps going out to their mailbox seven times a day, waiting for the “prints” someone was supposed to mail? Who is “Melissa” and why is she “F**KING” with “her?”

That mailbox part reminded me of the movie, Donnie Darko, which had an old woman who repeatedly went to her mailbox each day, waiting for…well, I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say the reason would fit right in on Lost. I think this last section may refer to Ben, as it mentions the “Animal Clinic of Oxford.” You’ll remember Ben patched Sayid’s bullet wound up in an animal hospital last season.

Is this stuff really important in guessing where the plot will next lead us? Probably not, but I found it interesting nonetheless. What we should take from it is that Sun has likely teamed up with Widmore to go after Ben, if her gun and the promo for next week’s episode is any indication.

  • Faraday tries to explain Charlotte’s time-sickness by saying the brain’s internal clock doesn’t react too well to being flashed through time repeatedly, and the amount of time one has spent on the Island directly correlates to how quickly the symptoms show up. Strange then that Charlotte and Miles are the first two to show symptoms, eh? We know there’ve been allusions made to the fact that Charlotte’s been to the Island before, and has been trying to get back for quite some time.

I’m not sure if I posted this in one of my previous recaps, but I think it stands to reason that Miles is the son of the enigmatic Pierre Chang, who we saw berating Dharma miners in the season premiere. It can’t be yet another coincidence.

  • Ben tells Jack to meet him at “Long Beach Marina Slip 23.” Kate’s home address is 42 Panorama Crest.

  • There was a promo during a commercial break for a new ABC show, The Unsusuals. One of its stars: Harold Perrineau (whom you may know better as “Michael,” the guy who blowed himself up on the Kahana in the season 4 finale).

    the unusuals

Not that we had a lot of reason to doubt it (other than the fact dead people show up on this show every week), but that’s pretty much implicit confirmation he’s gone bye-bye.

  • Ben’s mainland network of Others must’ve all gone to the DMV at the same time when registering their vehicles.

  • I’ve said it before, but ya gotta love on-location shooting.
