Purpose & Destiny

Let’s turn our attentions to Locke, the once-lost (pun intended) soul now firmly grasping hold of his purpose. We’d assume that was to serve the Island by leading the Others. But is it? Has Locke, after all he’s been through, had enough of all the higher purpose and destiny bullshit? Why would he want to kill Jacob? Does he view Him as the source of all the ills that’ve befallen Locke and the other 815’ers? Is it simple revenge? Locke doesn’t seem to be acting with any irrational malice since he’s returned from the dead. He regards Ben with relative indifference, despite the man having strangled him back in the real world. Then again, Locke doesn’t seem to give a crap about reuniting Sun with Jin, or the rest of the castaways, so maybe he just doesn’t care about anything else at this point.

I dunno, I’d like to remain thinking that Locke is more enlightened and continues to serve the Island. Now, maybe that means the Island and Jacob aren’t entities with the same aims. Perhaps Jacob is in control of an unwilling Island, and has been for God knows how long. In Locke, the Island has finally found someone to break the hold Jacob has on the place and set it free. Wild speculation, sure, but we’ve gotta have a better reason than revenge for Locke to kill Jacob. Way back when, Jacob asked Locke to “help [him]” in the cabin. Only Locke could actually see Jacob; based on tonight, it sounds like Ben was full of crap when he said he could see him as well.

Now, let’s say the Island and Jacob are aligned–or even one and the same–why would Locke kill him? Well, things turned out alright for Locke when he died (maybe he’s still dead – Richard said “there’s something different about you” when he saw Locke again after 3 years away from the Island; maybe it’s something more than Locke just having found his purpose). By killing Jacob, Locke may be somehow enhancing the man’s powers, possibly giving it the ability to vanquish all its enemies. I dunno, like I said, this is all just wild speculation at this point. I have about 20 more Wednesday nights sitting on the couch to figure it all out.

In either case, Ben continues his manipulative ways, looking to convince Richard that Locke’s not the ideal leader he thought he was. And Richard himself, while willing to take Locke to see Jacob, doesn’t seem too enthusiastic about the idea.

Richard hasn’t had much luck with his last two leaders in Widmore and Ben, and he tells the latter Locke may be trouble as well. Ben is only too happy to oblige that line of thinking if it somehow gets him back in control of the Others. Fasten your seatbelts.

  1. 1. Ok, I agree, I, too, am sick of Kate. I like the “new” Sawyer as he is with Juliette. Let’s hope this “love quadrangle” does serve some real purpose, and isn’t as you describe, “for us ladies”….but the whole “Mother”/pregnancy thing with her, Sun, Ales, and the Others, etc, and Juliette in the lab in the future and coming to the island, has to have some purpose. Also, speaking of Mothers and Fathers, there is also as noted by many, that there is a “Father” issue thing going on with many of the characters as well….maybe it’s a whole “family” thing. So other things besides redemption and destiny are prevalent.
    2. What is the possibility that Locke is now becoming a manipulator himself, and only telling Ben he is going to kill Jacob? Maybe that is not his original intention…but he wants Ben to think that it is, so that he can get Ben to do ????
    3. In the flash forward of Season 3? Kate says to Jack, “we aren’t supposed to go back”. Maybe when Kate gets back this time, (if she does), they accomplish something and flash on the “mainland” the way they did when the donkey wheel was turned, and then Kate, Juliette and Sawyer flash thirty years ahead when we see them in the previews back on the island.
    4. And, finally, I like your music idea. Remember BSG uses notes to find “earth”, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind use tones as well?
    5. Oh, yes, one last piece, I think one of the biggest “mysteries” I want to see resolved is who and what Richard Alpert is….Jacob, maybe? So, maybe that’s why Locke tells Ben he is going to kill Jacob, so that Ben will tell Alpert.
    6. I hope in the end that Ben is truly a “bad guy”, cause I can’t stand him!!!!!!

  2. Is it reasonable to assume that Ben’s “girlfriend”, (when he was a boy)got on the sub with the other Darma people in 1977, and then she comes back? Or do you think she could be related (like maybe Juliette’s sister?) to someone who comes back to the island in the future?
