Extreme Inspiration

Hadn’t planned on it, but I headed down to Buffalo’s west side to be a part of the big grand finale of the week-long project to rebuild the Powell family’s home, courtesy of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.. How many chances does one have to be at an event like that? Not the Super Bowl, sure; but cool nonetheless.

It Only Ends Once

9:28pm – After a season filled with all manner of time-bending, paradoxical hijinx and hilarity, I’m sure many are asking the question, “is this show ever going to make sense again?” One would hope the finale of Lost’s penultimate season will set things on a clear, straight path to mental salvation that will help us keep our sanity until 2010.

So, did the finale do just that? I dunno, it’s 9:30pm and I haven’t fired up the DVR yet. So, please, sit tight for a moment.

7 pages of furiously-scribbled notes and 90 minutes later…

Purpose & Destiny

a.k.a. “Shooting Kids & Blowing Up Hydrogen Bombs”

Now that season 5 is almost in the books, it’s about time to shift our attentions to the ultimate end game of the series, and how these last couple of episodes will set the table for the story the writers want to tell next year. Finding one’s purpose and fulfilling a destiny have been thematic elements throughout the series, and have certainly been front and center this year, nicely juxtaposed with the more scientific elements of time travel.

Getting kinda used to insane

Not quite as good as its companion episode, “The Constant” from season 4, but “The Variable” certainly had me engaged from start to finish this evening. It did feel a bit more like a “gap-filling” episode than a mind=blowing wizbang-a-thon that would shake the very foundations of our Lost understanding. That’s probably a good thing, because it’s been a long day and I’m not sure I can manage more than 16 paragraphs on this before I pass out. That said, we should probably try and pin down the Faraday Rules of Time that seemed to have been explained clearly and logically enough tonight…or were they?

What a wonderful smell you've discovered!

A somewhat lighter episode of Lost tonight, though it never felt like we were treading water until a sure-to-be-more-action-packed episode in two weeks. We filled in some gaps in Miles’ backstory, and well…alright, maybe we were treading water a bit. But it was some enjoyable treading.

C’mon, it was enjoyable, right?

As long as the dead guy says there's a reason…

Hot damn! Much unlike last week’s three minutes of awesome preceded by 57 minutes of yawn, tonight’s episode kept me interested from start to finish. That last three minutes certainly packed a punch, but the episode as a whole kept me at rapt attention throughout. And therein might lie a crack in the mostly impenetrable facade of Lost. If Locke and/or Ben and/or Smokey ain’t onscreen, the show can be quite a bit less interesting.

Whatever Happened, …aaah, whatever!

Perfect timing for an episode that didn’t do much to advance the time travel plot but did manage to take some time and answer a burning question or two, particularly when I don’t have a lot of time to write about it. This’ll be a somewhat abbreviated post because, quite frankly, this whole week’s been a punch in the face so far, and I could use some sleep. Let’s see if I can finish this up before midnight. Time’s a-wastin’.

A Separate Reality

Well, I had some more boring talk of the role reversals of our castaways all scoped out and ready to go, but thankfully, you were all saved from that by the dramatic close to the episode. How can I not start with a drugged-out Sayid shooting Ben in the chest, seemingly killing the youngin’? I stared at the screen in slack-jawed amazement for a good 5-6 seconds before I realized this occurred on an Island where the reality is that a paraplegic can walk again (Locke) and a terminal cancer patient becomes perfectly healthy (Rose — where are she and Bernard, by the way?).

Random Ramblings

Some random ramblings to start your week with.

  • The series finale of Battlestar Galactica aired this past Friday on the Sci-Fi channel. The show’s 4-year run, while having its share of up’s and down’s, was some of the finest television I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. I consider it second only to The Wire in my list of all-time greatest television shows (yes, better than Lost). I’m going to avoid a recap and instead urge you add the box set of season 1 (including the 4-hour mini-series kickoff) to your Netflix queue, or run over to Blockbuster and pick it up, or order the thing on Amazon.
